Who's Hungry Now?
Dexter loves his supper,
He's a super supper beast;
Though his ears say Regal Beagle,
His tummy says, "Let's feast!"

Simon on the Attack
He gets into the big dog's bowl
And rides it round the house,
Making raucous, metal noise
And growling like a grotesque grouse...
Until we snatch the bowl away
And steal his joy another day.

Simon the Dachshund
He's rug-shaker mischief-maker
Mole whiffer butt sniffer
Squirrel hater cat baiter
Thunder barker tree marker
Tail wagger biscuit nagger
Chair taker sleep faker
Walk stopper stair hopper
Door scratcher plot hatcher
Turtle biter dog fighter
Lap sitter arm fitter
My dog sleeps-like-a-log
The hibernating frog

On the Road
How could it be
So thin and green,
Three blades of grass
With a rough-hewn sheen;
Two black eyes
On its narrow head,
Raised above
The blacktop bed;
A lovely creature
Though a snake,
Long and still
And clearly awake.

A Dog's Desires
Dexter waits at the top of the stairs,
A creature of hope and very few cares;
All he wants is peace in his home,
A pizza to munch and a latte with foam.

Where They Go
The squirrel raced down the boardwalk,
Our dog hot on its tail;
The squirrel leaped into the crabapple tree,
Thus the run to "No Avail."
Each day the race plays several times;
Each time the squirrels escape.
Just once I'd like to see our dog
Grab the squirrel by its scruffy brown nape!

Joyful Noise
Not all my noise is joyful,
But much of it might pass:
Singing in the shower
Or my Ave sung at Mass.
Calling for my little dog
With back door pitch and poise,
Plus all the words I pour in verse
Would count as joy full noise.

Not So Simple Simon
The lines and curves and contours
Of a little dachshund dog--
The numerous parts and details
Of a doggy catalogue:
His silky coat and perky ears;
His perfect little nose;
His bright brown eyes
And tar black nails
On mighty thunder toes;
His sturdy pointed power tail
That wags with special grace,
As he dashes down to greet me
When his order's back in place.
These are all the reasons why
The loss of him would rip the sky
And leave delight a fierce deny--
Or do I over-simplify
For such a giddy Little Guy?

Frollie at Play
Frollie entertains herself,
Hiding her tennis ball
Under a blanket or pillow
Or rolling it fast down the hall.
Frollie is a JRT,
Always on the move,
Looking for a playmate,
Looking for her groove.

Perspectives
"I and Thou"
My wife believes in UFOs
And alien intervention;
I believe in a warm dog's nose
And accident prevention.
#130
D
D is for Dog,
A creature so Dear,
Each child should have one
To love and to rear.
#120
Alternatives
I wouldn't mind dying
To be with the Lord;
Death itself
Is not what's abhorred.
Indeed it's the thoughts
Of what I will miss:
Walks with my dog
Or a true lover's kiss.

Boom!
Rascal is a Runner,
A Baskervillean hound;
He runs so fast at night he glows
And breaks the speed of sound!
Boom!
He breaks the speed of sound,
That Baskervillean hound;
You have to wear your ear plugs
Whenever he's around!
Boom!
